Although I just finished photographing Laura and Gary’s wedding this weekend at the Thomas Estate, the photos in this post are from a more unusual, private ceremony that Laura’s family had at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in San Ramon, which is her parents’ church. Laura’s father has been diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer, and as her wedding day drew near, her father’s condition worsened, and it was no longer a given that he would be able to show up on her wedding day. Her family came up with the idea of doing a ceremony two weeks ahead of time to make sure he could in some fashion be able to give Laura away, as well as give Laura’s sister Aaron away, since he was sick and unable to attend on the day of her wedding last year as well. When Laura told me of these plans, I couldn’t bear the thought that this incredibly moving ocassion would go undocumented, so I showed up to photograph it. It was a poignant and beautiful event. They concluded the ceremony with a vow renewal for Laura’s mom and dad, and a blessing for the whole family. I always feel priviledged to do the work I do, but moments like these give ever-richer meaning to my vocation. Stay tuned for photos of their gorgeous wedding last weekend!
